inspired by a germ cell tumor called a teratoma, this work illustrates the chaos that occurs when the human body focuses so obsessively on multiplying, regenerating, and expanding that it creates mangled structures that can include teeth, muscle, hair, skin, and bone. a teratoma forms when stem cells reproduce uncontrollably–they develop into various types of human tissue, creating a terrifying, alien-like complex within the body. my work leans into the foreignness and abnormality of this growth by including eyes, tentacles, and other extraterrestrial elements while highlighting the fascinating, gory beauty of this phenomenon in whimsical, bright colors. it captures the physical product of obsession within human cells, showcasing the frightening outcome of a normal physiological function gone awry due to an unchecked urge to replicate.
